An old letter
Earlier this year, my grandma mailed me an old letter that she recently found while rummaging through old cigar boxes. The letter she sent was written by my great, great, grandma and it was addressed… to me! She wrote this letter to me before my grandma was even born. How incredible is that?! Below are the words from her letter:
“Dear great, great, grandson. I’m writing this letter to you because we will never have the opportunity to meet, but I wanted to share some things with you that I’ve learned over the years in hopes that you will seek wisdom at an earlier age.
First, always be safe when you ride your horse into town. Many young men have fallen off their horses from riding too fast, thus suffering a many head injuries.
Also, don’t wander off when working with your family in the fields. Many young’ens have gone astray and lacked the sustenance to return home safely.
Lastly, and most importantly, when you spend time with God, choose a corner in the rafters of your Pa’s barn – it’s there where you will hear from God. I love you; that’s why I wrote you these things ahead of time.”
I was moved to tears after reading her letter. I wanted to do everything I could to respect her wishes and honor her words. So, I’m selling my car and buying a horse for when I go into town. After purchasing the horse, I plan on looking for a job in a field. Then, I will ask my family to join me. Lastly, I plan to call my dad and ask him to look for a barn on Craigslist so that I can come over and finally hear from God. Wish me luck!
